How to Apply to Selective Business Programs

By August 11, 2025No Comments

Business is by far the most popular undergraduate major in the U.S., consistently accounting for around 1 in 5 degrees awarded. This means competition for spots in selective business programs can be stiff. Below is a look at the admissions criteria for four popular universities with standout business schools.

Indiana University – Kelley School of Business

This year, the Kelley School of Business updated its Direct Admit policy:

Fall 2026: Kelley direct admission comprehensive review process

Beginning in Fall 2026, the Kelley School of Business will use a comprehensive review process to consider students for direct admission. This approach looks beyond test scores and GPAs—placing greater emphasis on the rigor of high school coursework and a student’s overall potential for success in business.

Without published criteria for GPA or test scores as admissions indicators, students will need to pay special attention to the rigor of their high school courses, their involvement in extracurriculars, and the way they present themselves in their application essays and activities lists.

University of Michigan – Ross School of Business

In addition to the supplemental questions on the Common App (one specifically asking applicants to demonstrate their passion for business), The University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business requires a portfolio for admission. The Ross Portfolio is comprised of two parts:

  1. A business case discussion (500 word essay)
  2. An artifact and description (This “artifact” should represent something significant about your life and shows how you’ve put learning into action.)

Prospective Ross students have an opportunity to think creatively about how to use the portfolio as part of their application.

The University of Wisconsin—Madison – Wisconsin School of Business

In the fall of 2024, 654 direct admit students matriculated at the Wisconsin School of Business.

Although the Wisconsin School of Business does not list specific requirements for admission, admitted students complete rigorous coursework, especially in math and social studies, as well as demonstrate strong examples of leadership in their activities.

The University of Texas at Austin – McCombs School of Business

The McCombs School of Business is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the #6 best undergraduate business schools in the country. In 2023, the school’s acceptance rate was 11%. Students applying to UT Austin must submit test scores with their application which means that these scores are a factor in determining acceptance to this selective business program.
