The University of New Hampshire Highlights:

The University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH is a public college located one hour from both Boston and Portland. Just under half of the students hail from New Hampshire, while others represent nearly every US state and 43 countries. With D1 sports and R1 research offerings, Wildcats have access to plenty of opportunities in the classroom and beyond. Here are 5 things that make UNH unique.

Research:

UNH is an R1 research institute, offering many ways for students to participate in research early in their college careers. The annual Undergraduate Research Conference has over 2000 student presenters, and there are research grants and summer fellowships available to undergraduates. UNH also features great scientific facilities like a wind tunnel, wave tank, and a manufacturing center.

Sustainability:

Sustainability is important to UNH, which is ranked one of the most sustainable campuses in the US with a STARS platinum rating. With 2 Certified Green Restaurants, university farms growing food and composting food waste, and fully self-generated energy, UNH puts eco-consciousness into action. The school offers more than 450 related courses and a unique sustainability dual major. Students who are in tune with the environment might also enjoy College Woods, a 270-acre nature preserve used by students for walking, hammocking, and environmental research.

Semester in the City:

Looking for hands-on experience and want to connect with professionals beyond campus? The Semester in the City program allows students to spend a semester in Boston completing an internship with local nonprofits pursuing social change. Students receive course credit and meet regularly with a mentor. 92% of UNH undergraduates engage in at least one high impact experience such as research or internships, so there are plentiful opportunities for applied skills and engagement across fields.

Oceanography:

UNH is a leader in oceanography and ocean mapping. Located just 20 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean, their College of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering offers three interdisciplinary undergraduate majors and two minors. A marine research complex and an ocean engineering lab provide access to hands-on learning.

Merit aid:

88% of UNH students receive need-based financial aid or scholarships. Merit scholarships up to $14,000 are awarded on the basis of academics, using a recalculated GPA from students’ core academic classes. These scholarships are awarded at admission, some without an additional application.
