A student’s educational outcomes don’t always align with their journey through school. While a student may earn an A or B average, the journey to that point can be fraught with challenges: late or missing assignments, last minute studying for tests, and a general sense of struggle and anxiety. Executive functioning skills can either facilitate or hinder a student’s journey through school. Educators often hear stories of students who struggle with completing homework on time, feel overwhelmed embarking on large assignments or papers, and generally have a hard time keeping up. Various school-based supports—such as testing retakes, flexible deadlines, and reduced workloads—can help students navigate these challenges but don’t address underlying causes or relieve a student’s stress.

Here are some common executive function challenges that can significantly impact a student’s journey:

Organization:

This skill revolves around creating effective systems, paying attention to detail, maintaining consistent effort, and establishing routines. Without a clear plan, students may miss assignments, lose track of tasks, or remain uncertain about whether they’ve completed their work.

Time Management:

Students who struggle to structure and organize their time often face obstacles in their academic journey. A reliable system for inputting daily tasks and deadlines is essential, allowing them to assess and prioritize their workload effectively.

Initiation:

Difficulty in starting assignments, papers, or even everyday chores can create substantial inner conflict for students. This challenge can be a significant barrier to achieving success and maintaining motivation.

These three executive functions are crucial for a student’s daily functioning and their ability to reach academic goals. By recognizing and addressing these challenges, educators can better support students in navigating their unique journeys.
