Happy August 1st! What does that mean? The new Common App is live! Whether your student has been working on their activities and personal statement all summer or they are just getting started, the new iteration of the Common App for 2024-2025 is now available. Here’s a few things student can get started on (if they haven’t already):

Add your colleges to your Common App list!

This is required in order to submit your applications. Once this step is complete, you’ll be able to see your supplemental essay prompts, and any school-specific requirements. These could include personal information like your state of residence or if you need to enter your grades manually to your application.

Add your activities and personal information!

If you haven’t already, make sure to complete the activities section. Don’t rush on this section – it’s important to strive to present your accomplishments as clearly as possible. You only get 150 characters per activity to talk about what you do. In addition, the personal information section is a little longer than what you’d anticipate. It can be helpful to do this with your parents, they may need to provide information you don’t have.

Finally, check out your supplemental essays!

Majority of the time you will have to write more essays than just your personal statement. For example, if you are applying to UW-Madison, you are required to write a 650 word essay about why you want to attend. It will be really helpful to go over these prompts as soon as you can, and start writing drafts before the beginning of senior year.

With the new version of the Common App, it’s time for students to get started on applications if they haven’t already. It can be a daunting process, but Galin counselors are always here to help if you have any questions!
