Dr. Bakshi grew up in the Boston area, studied psychology at Harvard University, and then moved to California to earn her Ph.D. in Neuroscience at UCSD. For the past 20 years, she has been at UW-Madison and is a tenured faculty member in the School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Bakshi has been very active in graduate education and training, teaching in several courses for M.D. students, Ph.D. students, and medical residents and fellows. She runs an internationally known lab studying the brain mechanisms of mental illness, and has mentored numerous trainees at all levels on their research projects. She has extensive experience with admissions to M.D./Ph.D. and Ph.D. programs, having served on the Medical Scientist Training Program Admissions Committee at UW-Madison and also participating in admissions / recruitment for various Ph.D. programs in biomedical sciences. Over the past two decades, she has reviewed applications and conducted admissions interviews for approximately 400 applicants to these programs. Dr. Bakshi also oversees undergraduate admissions interviews in the state of Wisconsin for students applying to Harvard.

What Dr. Bakshi enjoys most is working with students at different stages of their education and helping them discern their professional passion. She has advised numerous students on choosing what type of graduate program (M.D., M.D./Ph.D., Ph.D. in STEM or biomedical fields), might be a good fit for them and which course of action would provide the best preparation for their ultimate career goals. Dr. Bakshi leads several national scientific committees that propose best practices for promoting women in science and in recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce in biomedical and STEM fields. She serves on the steering committees for multiple newer dual-degree graduate programs, including Ph.D./J.D. and Ph.D./M.P.A. programs at UW-Madison. She also is the very proud mother of two teenage girls, who themselves are on their own higher education journeys.
